Error decompressing PSWin32.exe during an upgrade installation

This error message is usually caused by someone being logged into PHONEslips when you are trying to run the upgrade, or by a PHONEslips file being in use on the server when you are trying to run the upgrade.

Solution 1) Double check your client workstations to make sure they are out of the PHONEslips program. Make sure the toolbar is closed, and make sure you do not see the pink PHONEslips icon in the system tray on the computer.

Solution 2) It is possible that a PHONEslips file is still open on the server. This usually happens if a client workstation is improperly shutdown, or otherwise disconnected from the network while running PHONEslips and can create what is known as a 'phantom' login. In order to resolve this, we need to close the PHONEslips file that has been left open. The method to close open files varies between the operating systems, so please read the instructions specific to the operating system on your PHONEslips server.

Windows XP/2000

Step 1) Right click on the My Computer icon and select Manage.

Step 2) On the left side of the screen select Shared Folders, and then choose Open Files.

Step 3) On the right side of the screen find any files that reference the pslips directory and close them.

Windows NT

Step 1) When you are at the server click on the Start button, go to Programs, then Administrative Tools and choose Server Manager.

Step 2) Double click on your server name in the list. Click the 'In Use' button. Find any PHONEslips files, highlight the entry and click the 'Close Resource' button.

Windows 95/98/ME

Step 1) Click on your Start button, go to Programs, then Accessories, and click on System Tools. Under System Tools, look for Net Watcher. If you do not have Net Watcher under your System Tools menu, then go to Step 2, if you do have Net Watcher, then skip to Step 3.

Step 2) You may need your Windows CD available to install Net Watcher. To install Net Watcher, go to your Start button, click on Settings, and Control Panel. Double click on the Add/Remove Programs icon, then click on the Windows Setup tab at the top of the window. Highlight the System Tools category and click the 'Details' button. Check the box next to 'Net Watcher' and push OK, then push Apply. Windows may prompt you to insert the Windows CD at this point.

Step 3) Net Watcher will give you a list of all users currently connected to your computer, and what files they have open. In order to close a file, you need to highlight the entry, then click on the 'Administer' menu and select 'Close File'. You only need to close files that are related to PHONEslips, so anything that is listed as being in the \Pslips folder.

'Access Denied' error when opening PHONEslips

Note: If you are running Windows 2000 or XP, please refer to this article first

There are a few possible causes for this error message:

    1) That user name is already in use. PHONEslips will not permit more than one person to use the same name at the same time. So if Bob is logged in to PHONEslips at his office, and then tries to log in to PHONEslips using the user name Bob at a different computer, then it will generate this error. If the user is already in use at another workstation, then get them out of PHONEslips on the workstation that they're not using.

    2) Insufficient access rights on the server. All PHONEslips users must have full access rights to the PSLIPS folder on your PHONEslips server. If the user lacks rights, have the systems administrator grant them full rights to the directory where PHONEslips is installed.

    3) Anti-virus programs might be interfering. Sometimes if anti-virus software is actively scanning a database file it can lock the file, denying access to anyone else who tries to use the file. As a test you can temporarily disable the antivirus program on both the workstation(s) in question and the server.

    4) The specified file is set to read only. A file's properties can be set to read only which would prevent PHONEslips from making changes in the database. To check this, browse to the PSLIPS folder on the PHONEslips server, right click on the file that is mentioned in the error message and select properties. At the bottom of the properties window there are 4 check boxes. Make sure the check box that is marked 'Read Only' is not checked.

    5) The specified file may not exist in the Pslips folder. Check the Pslips folder on your network and make sure the file is listed in that directory. If it is not for some reason, you may need to restore the file from a backup.

    6) The user's computer may have crashed or it may have been otherwise disconnected from the network and left a phantom log in on the server. To check for a phantom logon, go to the PHONEslips server, and follow the instructions listed below, specific to your server's operating system.

Windows XP/2000

Corrupt Index error messages

Cause:

PHONEslips uses index files to accelerate searches. An index can become corrupt if a computer crashes, a power failure occurs, etc. You can repair a corrupt index using the re-index option in the PSAdmin program. The re-index option rebuilds the current database(s) by re-synchronizing the current index files with existing database records. In addition, deleted records from existing database(s) are removed during the re-index process.

NOTE: If you receive this error message frequently, and have had to reindex often, there is most likely a situation on the network that is causing this database corruption. One of the most common causes of database corruption is running Windows 2000 or XP client machines that are accessing files on a Windows 95/98 or Windows ME computer that is acting as the PHONEslips server. If you are running PHONEslips with this configuration please refer to this page.

Some of the error messages that indicate a corrupt index are:

Error Searching
Error Updating Index
Corrupt Index, Please Rebuild

Resolution:

Step 1) Make sure everyone has closed the PHONEslips program.

Step 2) If you already have a shortcut to PSAdmin installed on the machine, then go to Start, Programs, PHONEslips, click on PSAdmin and skip to step 4. Otherwise, continue to step 3.

Step 3) If you do not have PSAdmin in your PHONEslips program group, you can still run the program by browsing to the Pslips folder on your PHONEslips server and double clicking on the PSadmin.exe file. Click here for instructions on how to find the PSlips folder on your network, then click the Back button on your browser to return to this help topic.

Step 4) Now click on the File menu, and select Reindex.

Step 5) Choose the database(s) you want to re-index, or you can choose All Databases and click Ok. We always recommend leaving 'Make backup of DAT files' checked. This will create a backup of your database files in the state before they are reindexed.

Error opening USER.LCK file

This error occurs when the user.lck file is corrupt or missing. This error is usually caused when someone is logged into PHONEslips while you are trying to install a new user license. You can restore this file from a backup, or make sure everyone is logged out of PHONEslips and regenerate the file using the licenses.exe file located in the PSLIPS directory on the server.
